[rrd-developers] API for reading RRD metadata

Apologies if this has come up before...

I haven't been following RRDtool 1.1.x development, but I'm wondering
whether it will include an API for reading the DS, RRA, PDP and CDP
definitions.

Cricket needs some of this data, and currently includes a Perl module
which extracts it directly from the RRD file.  Apart from being
aesthetically unpleasant, this module must be updated for every
architecture on which Cricket can run.  This adds an
architecture-dependent component to an otherwise
architecture-independent Perl program.

Are there any plans to add such an extension in the development branch
of RRDtool?
