[rrd-developers] No text visible on graphs created with latest development release?

My apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, but I did check 
the archives first, with no luck.

I've built the latest snapshot of RRDtool and so far have been unable to 
get any text to display on the graphs.  How does RRDtool render text? 
 Am I missing fonts or a library or something?  

Eagerly awaiting a solution, this is driving me nuts.
