Are you certain that the RRA that line comes from isn't the same length of time as the graph?

If you do a `rrdtool info filename.rrd` are there only 288 entries for the RRA being read?
(288 is the number of 5 minute readings in a day.) You might be leaning just far enough back in time that the RRA doesn't cover the first reading and it is bumping you down to the 30 minute readings.

Maybe knock ten minutes off the full day and see if it still occurs?
