I read that message again.

What happened before that version 1 file was created with version 3 live
head
and then rrd_open incorrectly read it.

With my patch rrd tool will always create rrd
file of the _current_ version. So I dont see a need to modify fwrite.

Now if you wish that rrdtool create version 1 file unless new functionality
is explicitily requested this is another story. And more complex patch.
