That's why I put my API code up for discussion as `not ready for commit'
- I wanted to give people some idea of what I'm doing, in case it
overlaps with other work, while not completely changing the direction of
trunk until it is ready.

The changes committed so far didn't seem too controversial (mainly
because they just re-arrange some existing code), however, the more
ambitious stuff can potentially go in a branch of it's own if you
prefer.
