A minor comment about that:

Rather than introducing some complex and unreadable command line syntax,
I'd go for the configuration file approach right away when something
more complex than the current solution is required. That way, very
simple setups could be done with the currently implemented -P option
while more complex stuff could be configured in the config file - which
is _way_ more readable and allows for way more flexible configurations.

As a sidenote: I don't think the config file support has to be done
before 1.5 - that can easily be added later on, even without braking
backward compat.
