good catch ... I am planning on a complete rrdtool rewrite to cater
for the more fundamental things that have come up over the last 13
years or so ... since the changes will be fundamental, this will
happen in a separate git repo ...

my plan is to first create a spec (with you all helping) and then
do a indigogo project to finance the development of rrdtool 2.x
