well the problem is that rrdtool is very generic ... look at the
rrd_format.h to see how the fileformat is constructed ... there is not realy
'space' for additional user storage at this point ... it might certainly be
envisaged, but then again having a separate file with the same basename and
a special ending looks not cludgy to me at all ...
