Instead of reinventing the wheel, why don't you take a look at a tool such
as 'cricket'.  It's faster than MRTG, it allows you to collect multiple data
sources per target, collect data from multiple sources (SNMP, files,
scripts, and perl subroutines), it supports parallel data collection,
multiple graphs for each target, and several varieties of alarm conditions.

The one drawback is that its configuration systems is a bit different from
anything else I've seen, but once you wrap your mind around it you'll wonder
why more programs don't use something similar.
