This is not possible with mrtg-2.8.12. I made a patch, you can download
it from the 14all website:

     http://www.uni-ulm.de/~rbawidam/mrtg-rrd/mrtg-2.8.12-threshold

It fixes some other problems relating MaxBytes (counter wraps) and data
type (options gauge/absolute).
