I guess there were no replies.  I'll try my best but the answer won't be

The height and width are for the actual graph area, not the surrounding
space.

That one is simple:  don't ask for them.

" LINE1:bla#rrggbb:legendname " will give you a legend while
" LINE1:bla#rrggbb "            will not.

" rrdtool graph <whatever> --title <whatever> " will use extra height

You can't do much about the left hand side and the right hand side.
I think you are not even allowed to remove the right hand side.
