I compiled rrdtool-1.0.11 with gcc 2.7     => good
I compiled rrdtool-1.0.25 with gcc 2.95.2  => bad
I compiled rrdtool-1.0.11 with gcc 2.95.2  => bad
I compiled rrdtool-1.0.25 with gcc 2.7     => good

What is wrong with egcs?
How about a "make test" before "make install"?
