[rrd-users] install of 1.0.27

I am having a problem installing rrd 1.0.27.

/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 perl-shared/blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.bs /usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.27/lib/perl/auto/RRDs
/usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.27/lib/perl/auto/RRDs': No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [install-data-local] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/mrtg/rrdtool-1.0.27'
make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/mrtg/rrdtool-1.0.27'
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

it seems that 'make install' creates a '/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.27/lib/perl' *file*, not directory, and then install craps out. Has anyone else noticed this?
