Sorry but we should say : 

168952370 -- Sat May 10 12:12:50 1975 (no, seconds since 1970 are not always valid)

Because:

rrdtool create toto.rrd --start 168952370 --step 300 DS:toto:GAUGE:600:U:U RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:576
ERROR: start time: did you really mean month 168952370?

$ rrdtool
RRDtool 1.0.25  Copyright 1997-2000 by Tobias Oetiker <tobi at oetiker.ch>
