  Looks to me like a makefile syntax incompatibility.  Last I looked,
which was a long time ago, Sun used their own BSD-based make.  Try
using gmake instead; I find I have to use gmake for about 25% of the
open source packages I build on this OS, and Solaris may have a similar
issue.
