[rrd-users] Some values at nan..

I got a problem using rrdtool, I create a base for values each 30
minutes.here is the code that I use:

rrdtool create AOL_a00286.rrd --start 971880977 --step 1800
DS:debit:GAUGE:3600:U:U RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:45

rrdtool update AOL_a00286.rrd   971883000:551   971884800:848

 why are there nan values at the begining and in the middle?
What did I wrong?
