from my (rather old) gcc manual:
"OVERALL OPTIONS
-x language
Specify explicitly the language for the following
input files (rather than choosing a default based
on the file name suffix) . This option applies to
all following input files until the next `-x' op-
tion. Possible values of language are `c',
`objective-c', `c-header', `c++', `cpp-output',
`assembler', and `assembler-with-cpp'.
"
In my output I cannot find "-xO3" nor "-xdepend" however since I don't
do shared libraries and also no solaris, this may explain it.

Previous jobs with other setups, most likely. Are you sure that
gcc is being used? Does the OS detection work properly? Does it
help to fiddle a bit with the Makefile?
Hope this helps a bit. No clear answer, sorry.
