I assume you changed the heartbeat value using rrdtool tune?

You can verify the current settings using rrdtool info.

It is not necessary to have a heartbeat which is larger than the
step time.  What is important is that you send updates into RRDtool
before the heartbeat timer expires.

If you have more problems, repost useful information (to the list)
as there may be another problem that I didn't spot.
