Eddy,

If you set the PATH in your .profile from root, you'll be sure to compile
ok.

Example:
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/xpg4/bin:/usr/ccs/bin
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib
PS1="`/bin/uname -n`:$LOGNAME $ "
export PS1 PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH

You will find ar in /usr/xpg4/bin.
