I don't know if I want to get involved in this, but...

Define database.  The size of the .rrd or the size of 
the RRA in the .rrd?

Since the number of steps determines the length of the RRA (hourly, daily,
etc. => 12 steps of 300 seconds = 1 row in "hourly" RRA), is it correct to
say that given the same interval, the RRA with the largest number of steps
dictates the total size of the database?

If I am correct with this assumption, I believe I fully understand the
model.
