[snip huge spike story]

I really need to update the faq again...

1) Spiking in RRDtool usually occurs when counters are reset. These
resets look like counter wraps as far as RRDtool is concerned.
2) You should tell RRDtool what the maximum expected rate is. Any
rate over this number will be assumed to be invalid input.
3) Using the program "rrdtool tune" you can view and adjust the
properties of the rrdtool database. You need to modify the
max values; for OC3 these are 19440000.
4) Using the programs "rrdtool dump" and "rrdtool restore" you can
make a backup and restore it again; if you use the '--range-check'
switch to "rrdtool restore" it can remove spikes.

Search the archive for more on the wrap vs. reset problem. This is
not really an RRDtool problem, it is a front-end problem.
