I think you were.  Apart from being a database, there's not much
that rrdtool does, the most visible part being graphing.

RRDtool doesn't collect data.  When you call RRDtool you're effectively
saying "hello rrdtool, store this in your database".  If you don't want
to store the data in RRD, say (for instance):
"hello mysql, store this in your database".

And then you probably say: "but rrdtool can also create an image ?!?"
and I answer: "If you need a graphing program, get a graphing program."

I sure was.  That doesn't mean I put up my defenses when I got an
answer I didn't expect.  Free tip: rephrase your question next time.

If you get a wrong answer then chances are you asked the wrong question.

The correct question would be: Can MRTG store data into an SQL database.
I probably wouldn't have answered then but since I'm typing anyway:
I don't think so but I am not sure.
