It is a good idea.
The easiest method for me to use, in this specific case (where I only need a
couple of graphs) is to install the latest 1.1 CVS snapshot of RRDTool and
use the new VDEF:<var2>:<var1>,TOTAL function.
I've done it and it works well (although I will go to go through the usual
fussing with fonts a layout with 1.1 as normal!)

Have one extra DS called "time". In your rrdtool create command
have "DS:time:GAUGE:700:U:U". Keep a MIN and a MAX RRA.
PRINT:starttime:MIN:"%12.0lf"
