Frank,
  It looks like you're missing a double qoute (") and a comma (,).  The
line should:

"-x", "HOUR:12:DAY:1:DAY:1:24:%d",

Here is a working example that I use for changing the x-grid.  It's used to
display 1 week of data.

"--x-grid", "HOUR:4:HOUR:24:DAY:1:0:%a %m/%d"
