Yes,

by dumping to xml, using some regular expressions to add fields and
using rrdtool restore.
It's a drag..

I'd advise you to use different rrd's if possible.

is it possible to add fields later, after creation of the database?

Second question.
Is anything known of the perfomance of rrdtool on databases as large
as 50K entries for about 60 fields?
