Thanks very much Rickey... after trying your advice, it got me to do a 
'man strftime' and I got the rest of the details on format that I needed. 
Excuse my ignorance.

Here's what I did for my monthly graphs....

"--x-grid", "DAY:1:WEEK:1:WEEK:1:0:%b %d %Y"

Attached is what the image looks like.
