Thanks for the replies, looks like I'm going to be sticking with 
passthru() also for the time being. Can't seem to get 
buildconf/configure to go without failing:


./buildconf:autoconf: Undefined macros:

./configure: line 65171: syntax error near unexpected token 
`AC_ADD_INCLUDE($RRDTOOL_DIR/include)'

[root at leto-ii php-4.3.1]# ls /usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.45/include/
rrd.h
