 This seems like a pretty basic question, no need to 
 complicate it with all thses convulted tools.
 
 Why can't you just fetch the data and work with it that way?  
 Just look at the "rrdtool fetch" command.
 
 You'll have to write code external (perl) to rrdtool to 
 determine what you want to do with the data, but fetch will 
 get the data that's in there.
