As long as you're thinking it to be like this, you don't quite understand
what's happening.  There are *no* COUNTERs nor GAUGEs on the graph.

Numbers are processed into rates.  This happens according certain rules
and both COUNTER and GAUGE are such rules.

Now there are *only* rates.  *These* are graphed.
