This sounds like perl as shipped with Solaris itself. (And to name it a
bit old would be too gentle ;-)

I suggest you find a more recent perl version and install it. Prefably
from the same source that got you your GCC package and such.

And I notice Toby has some kind memories of this perl version:
  "yet another file ... pod in perl 5.005 is a bitch ..."

Anyway I think you get the general impression by now. ;-)
