Thanks for the suggestion. I removed "-I/usr/include" from CPPFLAGS and
the compile succeeded.

Could this be the case: http://www.unixguide.net/sun/faq/5.09.shtml

Amongst other things, it says:
" Another possible cause is that you're using ``gcc -I/usr/include.'' "

Don't know why this would be bad (still googling), maybe you can use the
info available to quick-fix the problem yourself? Please let us know!
