have you considered running the rrd storage on a central server and
just transfering the data for input into rrd update to that server?

this is the model I am using in the new master/slave mode of
smokeping.

if you need a local copy of the rrd files, you could also update
the local copy and transfer the update info to the central server
at the same time.
