Yes it should but it really does struggle hence engaging the FreeBSD
developers on what the issue could be.

We have 20000+ rrdfiles which are being updated every 5 minutes on a 5
year old system with 2 CPU's and a very old version of rrdtool. 
I have to admit the system is quite busy with it but your AMD system
should perform effortless with 2000 files.
