[rrd-users] rrdtool make fails

i All,
 
I am not able to install rrdtools on my ubuntu box.
 
I am new to Linux as well as rrdtools.
 
I have followed the documentation given in rrdtools build section
 
First I installed all the libraries mentioned in the rrdtools build section and then set the environment variables for bash as given in the document.
 
Whenever I make rrdtools I am getting following error in the bottom
 
LD_RUN_PATH="/usr/local/lib" cc  -shared -L/usr/local/lib RRDs.o -L../../src/.libs/ -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.27/lib -lrrd  -o blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.so         \
           -lm -lz -lfreetype   \
          
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.so] Error 1
