[rrd-users] interpreting the info

I have setup the rrd database like this

    rrdtool create /var/rrd/apache.rrd \
     --start N --step 120 \
     DS:proc:GAUGE:300:0:U \
     DS:rss:GAUGE:300:0:U \
     DS:vsize:GAUGE:300:0:U \
     DS:pcpu:GAUGE:300:0:100 \
     RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:7.5:5760

Then there are updates like these

    /usr/bin/rrdupdate /var/rrd/apache.rrd N:11:2043596:177428:0.2

When I fetch I get

    rrdtool fetch /var/rrd/apache.rrd AVERAGE
                           proc                 rss
vsize                pcpu

    1226362200: nan nan nan nan
    1226363040: nan nan nan nan
    1226363880: nan nan nan nan
    ...

Then I look at the info

    rrdtool info /var/rrd/apache.rrd
    filename = "/var/rrd/apache.rrd"
    rrd_version = "0003"
    step = 120
    last_update = 1226448169
    ds[proc].type = "GAUGE"
    ds[proc].minimal_heartbeat = 300
    ds[proc].min = 0.0000000000e+00
    ds[proc].max = NaN
    ds[proc].last_ds = "11"
    ds[proc].value = NaN
    ds[proc].unknown_sec = 49
    ds[rss].type = "GAUGE"
    ds[rss].minimal_heartbeat = 300
    ds[rss].min = 0.0000000000e+00
    ds[rss].max = NaN
    ds[rss].last_ds = "2043596"
    ds[rss].value = NaN
    ds[rss].unknown_sec = 49
    ds[vsize].type = "GAUGE"
    ds[vsize].minimal_heartbeat = 300
    ds[vsize].min = 0.0000000000e+00
    ds[vsize].max = NaN
    ds[vsize].last_ds = "177428"
    ds[vsize].value = NaN
    ds[vsize].unknown_sec = 49
    ds[pcpu].type = "GAUGE"
    ds[pcpu].minimal_heartbeat = 300
    ds[pcpu].min = 0.0000000000e+00
    ds[pcpu].max = 1.0000000000e+02
    ds[pcpu].last_ds = "0.2"
    ds[pcpu].value = NaN
    ds[pcpu].unknown_sec = 49
    rra[0].cf = "AVERAGE"
    rra[0].rows = 5760
    rra[0].pdp_per_row = 7
    rra[0].xff = 5.0000000000e-01
    rra[0].cdp_prep[0].value = NaN
    rra[0].cdp_prep[0].unknown_datapoints = 2
    rra[0].cdp_prep[1].value = NaN
    rra[0].cdp_prep[1].unknown_datapoints = 2
    rra[0].cdp_prep[2].value = NaN
    rra[0].cdp_prep[2].unknown_datapoints = 2
    rra[0].cdp_prep[3].value = NaN
    rra[0].cdp_prep[3].unknown_datapoints = 2

Why are the values NaN?

cheers
