 hmm. your suggestion about "\n" did not help, it just adds a nonprintable charcter to the graph.  But I found that apparently "\r" has some effect, just not the desired one. It seems that it aligns the text to the current cell, not to the canvas. Two sample images included, "graph1.png" is with "\r". What I want is to have the "Date: ...." string at the right/lower corner of the canvas. The command to generate is graph is similar to the following:

/usr/bin/rrdtool graph - --start 1227781876 --end 1227785476 --width 300 --height 75 --title swap_free --vertical-label KB DEF:sum=/var/lib/ganglia/rrds/CAE-Bench Compute Nodes/lpsdm37c1.muc/swap_free.rrd:sum:AVERAGE AREA:sum#555555:lpsdm37c1.muc last hour (now 8,342,840) COMMENT:\s COMMENT:\s COMMENT:Date\: 2008-11-27 12\:31
