According to what I read in the previous discussions on this list
(https://lists.oetiker.ch/pipermail/rrd-developers/2005-April/001405.html)
The presence of  unknown values may produce wrong totals when
calculating the total from the average. For example:

>    0:UNKN 300:10 600:10 900:10
