Hi,
I would say this cannot be answered in general, because it is highly
domain-specific and depends on what you want to do. But as a general
rule of thumb I would try to use the expectation value of the
interval. (Use the emprical mean as an estimator.) The rrdtool update
function linearly interpolates the value to the next time point. This
way the actual time points when the updates arrives and the required
time points will fit on average.
