[rrd-users] could not make sense out of $file with rrdtool xport

Using rrdtool 1.38 I get this error message when trying to use xport on CentOS 6.5:

$ rrdtool xport datafile.rrd
ERROR: Could not make sense out of 'datafile.rrd'

Is this a known bug, or did I do something wrong?
