That'll teach me to actually read the code a little and understand
what's going on before suggesting a patch like that again.

There's another patch attached, with more work put in. This should be
(acutaly, I'm confident enough to say *IS*) backwards compatible, but
again, this needs more testing, than I have given it.

This patch detects a different cookie for a different format database,
for all modes except rrdtool create. This check is done in rrd_open, and
the global variable big_names_flag is set. rrd_create uses getopt_long
to find out whether to create a long name format database. I don't know
if (how?) this works when run in piped mode, which is, ironically, how
I'd like to be running it.

This patch is against 1.0.39, and is a surprisingly small 730 lines.

I would appreciate it very much if the feature were implemented into the
next version. If not, could you suggest some way of mapping ipfilter
rules (336 bytes of data) onto DS names? :)
