They're a graphical representation of the return time of all the ping packets. The darker the grey, the more packets returned at that time interval.

I just installed this tool - it is wonderful!!  I saw a question a while
back but never saw the answer - I have the same question:
 
what do the grey bars represent (above and below the median ping RTT)
