This is really not a smokeping question.

exim is a drop-in sendmail replacement, so you shouldn't need to  
reconfigure smokeping for your project.

  file $(type -p /usr/sbin/sendmail )
/usr/sbin/sendmail: symbolic link to `exim4'

  What you need to do is configure exim so it does send e-mails in a  
correct way. This is an exim question that won't be dealt with here.  
Exim comes with extensive and perfect documentation.
