[smokeping-users] Slave cannot open Secrets file (Permisson Denied)

Sounds like you're running on Linux, and I'm FreeBSD, but here is
a generic reply that I hope will be useful.
Figure out what GROUP the smokeping daemon is running as, and:
chgrp $GROUP /opt/smokeping/etc/secrets.conf
Group-read permissions for group "root" don't do any good if the
smokeping daemon isn't running as a user that belongs to group
"root" -- and you probably don't want it to. Change the file's
group to match the smokeping daemon, not the other way around.
And check the ownership/perms of the other path elements
/opt
/opt/smokeping
/opt/smokeping/etc
to ensure that they will grant search permission to $GROUP
