I've used the how-to that you can find on http://www.how2centos.com/installing-smokeping-on-centos-5-5/ The problems : - i've added 2 new smokes, restart smokeping and...smokeping doesn't generate RRD files - the 2 graphs that are created (RRD), doesn't collect any pings - smoketrace doesn't work at all Is there anyone who can give me some advice or want to take a look at the server? Right now, it's only one server, but i want to set smokeping+smoketrace on all my VPS servers (the only thing they have to do is backup dns and smokeping ;-)) Smokeping : http://s01.ua.it2go.eu/smokeping/smokeping.cgi Best regards and thanks! Assuming that you are running apache, make sure that your apache user is able to write to the directory you've specified for your rrd files. cheers, Darren From Vinny_Abello at Dell.com Mon Feb 28 23:22:19 2011 From: Vinny_Abello at Dell.com (Vinny_Abello at Dell.com) Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2011 22:22:19 +0000 Subject: [smokeping-users] Correct smokeping config In-Reply-To: References: <4D66F28B.5010200@kdr.ms> Message-ID: As Darren said, this is likely a permissions issue. Usually only the rrd file owner has rw permission. The most common problem I see that causes this is someone launched smokeping under the wrong user account (like root) instead of the user it should be running under. As a result, all rrd files are owned by root. When you restart and specify the right user, all the files that were previously created cannot be modified by the correct user account, hence graphs not updating. A quick chown -R of the datadir specifying the appropriate user account is usually the fix. Just check and see who owns all the rrd files. Change it to whatever the appropriate account smokeping should be running under. Hope this helps. -Vinny -----Original Message----- From: smokeping-users-bounces+vinny_abello=dell.com at lists.oetiker.ch [mailto:smokeping-users-bounces+vinny_abello=dell.com at lists.oetiker.ch] On Behalf Of Darren Murphy Sent: Friday, February 25, 2011 2:18 AM To: Kris De Rocker Cc: smokeping-users at lists.oetiker.ch Subject: Re: [smokeping-users] Correct smokeping config On 25 February 2011 08:06, Kris De Rocker wrote: > - i've added 2 new smokes, restart smokeping and...smokeping doesn't > generate RRD files The first thing that I would check is file/directory permissions. I am running smokeping and smoketrace on ubuntu 10.04. I have everything set up and working without any issues. When I run a trace it will only list a couple of the hops, all of the other hops it lists as 100% packet loss. I know this is not the case, as I am able to access the remote server without any issues. Is there a setting I need to configure somewhere? Please provide as much detail as you can as I am new to smokeping and still working my way around the configuration files. They just looked empty. Get this when I try to add hosts to a working configuration some times as well. And to fix it, I stop smokeping, delete the *.rrd files for the non working hosts (leaving the others that are working) and then restarted smokeping. There is also a speedy apache thing that I was told at one time to stop with: pkill -f speedy and then my data began populating the graphs.
