I have smokeping 2.6.8. installed in several CentOS 6.2 boxes and they all have this problem. I have one install on an old SuSE box and it works fine, but I can't figure out what the difference is. Does something need to be enabled for this? Permission problem? Thanks, Matt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I re-did two of my servers and also setup a third virgin server using that guide. However, that doesn't solve my original problem. The cropper/zoom portion still doesn't work. I click on an image to drill down and when I go to select part of the graph, the image is grabbed (attempt to copy), but the cropper isn't doing it's function. What else could be the problem? BTW, I'd love to know if you have an RPM for that guide - otherwise I might make one. I'm not sure what needs to change. The only part of the default httpd.conf file that references cgi-bin is this: ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "/var/www/cgi-bin/" # "/var/www/cgi-bin" should be changed to whatever your ScriptAliased #ErrorDocument 404 "/cgi-bin/missing_handler.pl" And this from Tobi: "you must not put these files into the cgi-bin directory since your webserver will try to run them ... put them somewhere else!" Well, if I put them someplace else, how is the browser know where to find them? What is the recommended location for them, other than /var/www/cgi-bin ? Or can I put something in httpd.conf to tell it not to run them? Thanks, Matt On Sun, Dec 2, 2012 at 1:45 AM, Matt Almgren wrote: > Great guide! I am using a step of 60 seconds in my smokeping setup, had all RRDs regenerated to get the graphs I need to see: High Resolution fping graph, taken NOW. However all graphs of my benchmarks are captured in batches one or more days later (up to 4-5 months in corner cases). But taking a graph just one days later all details are gone! (for good, I fear): One Hour fping graph - yesterday - ALL DETAIL GONE! If the detail is really lost, this is a bit of a disaster forcing to repeat an all bunch of measurements that were already done and then immediately capture the graphs. Can anyone confirm most details of my history are gone? This is the step of the rrd for the graphs attached to this message: ---cut # rrdtool info test1.rrd | grep step step = 60 ---cut My question: how to change the RRA values in the config file from the default (below my configuration) to permanently store up to 6 months detailed results at least? Disk space not an issue. (detailed is: always 1 step for at least a month, then just slightly more). My guess is that the second set of values are for daily data and the third for weekly.. or? ---cut *** Database *** step = 60 pings = 20 # consfn mrhb steps total AVERAGE 0.5 1 1008 AVERAGE 0.5 12 4320 MIN 0.5 12 4320 MAX 0.5 12 4320 AVERAGE 0.5 144 720 MAX 0.5 144 720 MIN 0.5 144 720 ---cut Thanks a lot! That's 1008 minutes if you use step = 60. > AVERAGE 0.5 12 4320 And 4320 results are stored at one data point per 12 steps (12 minutes in your config). That means that the last 4320*12 minutes are stored averaged over 12 minutes (and the minimum and maximum over each 12 minute period). If you really want to store full resolution data for 6 months, you need a line that has type average, step 1, and length 60*24*(365/2) = 262800 minutes (365/2 days): AVERAGE 0.5 1 262800 You may not find much use for the other detail levels in this case, so you might want to delete them. My memory is limited so I went for two+two months and switched to FastCGI to cope with the huge memory footprint of the plain smokeping.cgi AVERAGE 0.5 1 87600 AVERAGE 0.5 5 87600 So leaving a notice for whoever wishes to set a lower polling interval in their smokeping setup, to my experience at least: - in etc/config: change the step value - in /etc/config: adapt the rrd parameters according to your needs* - stop smokeping - clear or move the RRDs under smokeping/data (yes, your old graphs are gone!) - start smokeping *a basic rule to keep the same resolution you were previously seeing could be: multiply all "total" values for your increase factor, for example passing from 5 to 1 minutes polling intervals, multiply the totals by 5. I have set up multiple slaves at my neighbours houses to try to debug our Internet connections. These are also running version 2.6.7 (and some 2.3.6). I believe I have set up the secrets correctly since I get the slaves to work towards another master, but I am unable to get it to work towards the Amazon instance. I am running both the master and the slaves with -- debug-daemon to try to figure out what happens. It seems that the slaves are able to get the configuration from the master, and they are able to send the results back to the master based on the following text in the log: Sent data to Server. Server said OK However, I do not see anything in the log at the master. It created the appropriate rrd files upon the first launch, but they never seem to be touched thereafter. So where are my results being sent? Is there any interesting information other places than in syslog? I am at a bit of a loss, so any help is appreciated. -- Frank Olaf Sem-Jacobsen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have been using smokeping for a while now and have recently began experimenting on the distributed master - slave architecture. My question is this: I know how to add a slave to a target and that way both the server and the slave will ping the target for results. What if I only want the slave to ping the target? That way I can display results on the server for several different network paths. In this case I am describing, letting the server ping the target as well is not a good idea as the server and the target are separated by a firewall and that would mean more processing and perhaps bigger logs for the firewall. So the question is: Is it possible to define in the server configuration that only the slave is to ping the target? If yes what do I need to do? ----------------------------------------------------- Ioannis Theodoridis Network & Systems Engineer Network & Telecommunications Support Informatics Bank of Greece ----------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Guess I need to take a look at your wish list.. I did a little research based on your clue and came to suspect that my pango install(s) was/were the must likely suspect(s). I had had a lot of trouble installing it last night, as I was trying to make a local user install. Really I needed to do it as root. It turns out there were two pangos on the system -- or one pango some of was in /usr/local/lib and some in the $INSTALL dir.. RRDtool hAD finally built after much complaining to which the above pango situation was the solution at the time...I learned something about pkg-config --list-all along the way... Don't much know or care why at this point that fontcfg (which uses pango) was confused and couldn't find the fonts it needed for the png labels. But it was confused, apparently, because after I removed pango and rrdtool, re-installed pango as root, (but used the $INSTALL directory), re-installed RRDtool as the local user (which was a breeze this time), and re-installed Smokeping, I now have fantastic looking monospaced font labels on my graphs! (And it only took me about 12 hours ;-) Steve On Wed, Dec 26, 2012 at 2:37 PM, Tobi Oetiker wrote: > the problem is, that fontconfig can not find a monospaced font on your > system, or that you gave rrdtool explicit instructions to use a nonexisting > font. > > Tobias Oetiker > tobi at oetiker.ch > 062 775 9902 > > On 26.12.2012, at 18:51, steve johnston > wrote: > > > Hello, > > > > Smokeping produces normal graphs, but the png label text is corrupted. > The png is encoded with a black sqaure in each character position, rather > than the character itself. I have a default install of SmokePing on Ubuntu server. The IPv4 part is working fine. Here's what I've done so far. FPing6 to the Probes file, see below for file contents. Tested FPing6 ::1 from a commend line. Received a response of ::1 is alive (So I'm thinking this part is working.) I then modified the Targets file adding the IPv6 section, + LocalIPv6. This created the graph, but no data. But then I was thinking what activates the FPing6 so I added it as a probe at towards the top of the Targets file. (Contents of Targets file is below.) Now when I restart SmokePing I'm getting an error the probe variable already exists. What am I doing wrong? Do I need multiple Targets files, one for each probe? If so where do I declare the name of each Targets file? Would appreciate any assistance.
