Depends what you mean by 'easy'.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP Pro 2.2Ghz Dual Core Notebook and running the Smokeping version 2.3.6 without any problems.
 
I need to get RTT time response of my HOSTs behind a Juniper Router.
 
It is great to use the <TelnetJunOSPing.pm> Probe to get this done !
 
However, I have a problem for my Smokeping Server to reach the Juniper Router.
 
My Smokeping server cannot directly create a Telnet connection to the Juniper Router. It has to go through a SOCKS proxy in order to estalish a Telnet connection to the Juniper router.
 
 
The SOCKS proxy is  version 5 without authentication and it uses the default dest. TCP port 1080.
 
Is there any way I can get those hosts RTT behind my Juniper router using this <TelnetJunOSPing> Probe Module which requires to get  through a SOCKS proxy ?

u can use <Qbasic> under windows  or <PERL> under linux or windows to write a script .
 
both of them are quite easy to learn (takes u approx. 2 - 5 evenings)
 
I assume u have got some basic programming skills in your post secondary school.

Hi Tobias,

A couple of comments.

Firstly, the slave needs no config file.

"A smokeping slave setup has no configuration file. It just needs to
know that it runs in slave-mode and its secret. The secret is stored
in a file for optimal protection."

So all you need is a single file containing the master password, and
this file should be referenced in your slave startup script, using the
--shared-secret option.

Secondly, from looking at your master config, it doesn't appear that
you reference the slave at all in your targets section. You should
have something that looks like (for example),

        ++ some-host
        menu = some-host
        host = x.x.x.x
        slaves = your-slave

My suggestions would be as follows:

1. Carefully follow the instructions given at the URL above
2. Check your smokeping log, particularly on the slave. Observe what
is logged after you start the slave - this will most likely give you a
good idea what's wrong.

Hello list,

I've made a small Smokeping theme named "Pulse" (in fact i just changed 
the layout of the basepage.html). I designed the theme around Smokeping 
v.2.3.6 (as packaged by Debian Sqeeze) and tested it Chrome 16.0.912.77 
and Firefox 9.0.0.1 and it looks good and provides all features.

Now, for further development, i need some "working/notworking" 
statements from people with other versions of Smokeping, other Browsers 
(or same the Browser with a other Version, etc.).

So 5-10 Minutes from your time can save me a lot of work. You just have 
to download a alternatve basepage.html, follow some instructions and 
check if everything runs as expected.

Why do i ask this: I develop a full Monitoring System Package with 
Smokeping and other Monitoring Apps in a bundle. "The Pulse Theme" is 
atm my basis, so i wanna be sure, everything is right with all 
Version/Browser combinations.

I?m using Smokeping for my final project and I have some doubs that maybe
you can answer:

-         -  Why Smokeping needs to be connected to internet even when I
have only one Target to a host in my LAN ?

-          - What is exactly the Standard deviation calculated at the
bottom right of the graphs? Is it related to the Jitter? Or is there
another way to know the jitter?

-          - Why sometimes when I add a new host, for the first minute I
get a list of errors saying that the RDD file doesn?t exist? This happens
commonly? Is there any way to solve this problem?

It shouldn't, unless your system is set up to use external DNS 
resolvers, external mail servers for alerts, etc.  With your system 
disconnected from the Internet, try pinging/resolving/etc every host 
name in your config files.  I bet there's something in there that won't 
work.

Standard Deviation is the std.dev. of the collected RTT samples.   
Obviously this is related to jitter in terms of describing "how much 
from the mean do the samples go".   However, "jitter" is an imprecise 
and undefined term (there are several slightly different ways of 
defining and measuring jitter, so you'd have to pick a definition 
first), so what it means in relation to your specific project is 
unanswerable.

Smokeping doesn't poll every host every single second.   Polling goes 
into a queue, and is executed on a schedule defined internally by 
Smokeping based on your "step" and "pings" settings.    Until the host's 
turn comes up in the queue and its polling is complete, the RRD files 
aren't created.  This is normal.   Smokeping isn't, and is not intended 
to be, a real-time, low-level monitoring solution.   It's intended to 
give you a sample-based/delayed view of what's been going on historically.

Hello All,

Just a quick one, we're seeing negative values on our Y axis of our 
graphing as follows:

http://www.racksrv.com/Web1_KSP_mini.png - graphs have been reset of 
late also.

As you can see the 0 has a - 1 also, I was wondering how we would ensure 
that this starts from 0.

I apologise if this is something simple I've overlooked, any assistance 
would be greatly appreciated.

I've just set up smokeping for the first time in quite a while; part
of a renewed interest is monitoring IPv6 connectivity.

fping6 seems to be broken on CentOS 6; at least the version that I got
from the rpmforge.  I see fping-2.4b2_to4-ipv6.tar.gz in the
distribution directory for smokeping, but in spite of the name, there
doesn't seem to be code to build fping6.

Does anyone use the fping6 probe, and can tell me where to get an
updated fping6 distribution?

The canonical site is http://fping.sourceforge.net, where the latest
tarball can be found. The one on the FreeBSD.org site is a copy
hereof, I believe.

Many thanks.  Actually, the source that I have is
fping-2.4b2_to4-ipv6, which I think is a bit newer than the version
you referenced.

But there's no fping6 built by that distribution either.  As far as I
can tell, the reference to ipv6 in that file is only in the name
(there doesn't seem to be code using IPv6 from what I can tell, though
c isn't really my area of specialty).

Still looking... I appreciate the response.

You need to compile it with a -DIPV6 flag, the resulting executable
will be IPv6-only, and should be renamed fping6 manually. Not very
user-friendly, I agree.

Did you try the fping package from EPEL 6? It provides /usr/sbin/fping6.

I wouldn't recommend using EPEL and Repoforge on the same box, but you
might be able to get away with it if you use yum priorities.

Wow!  That's an understatement!

What I eventually did was take the source rpm from rpmforge and
rebuild it.  I found that patched the source I had properly, and the
resulting fping6 works.  (I had not actually rebuilt an rpm before, so
I guess this does turn out to be a learning experience.)

I do have that fping6 binary happily ping6'ing my IPv6 hosts.  Thanks
for giving me enough information that I was able to puzzle it!

P. S. Ken's idea looks good, too, I assume his fping6 works. :-)  He's
also right about using yum priorities; I only enable rpmforge to
install particular packages, and only when the prereqs don't conflict.
