Software error:Can't call method "_pings" on an undefined value at /usr/share/perl5/smokeping/Smokeping.pm line 815.

For help, please send mail to the webmaster (webmaster at localhost), giving this error message and the time and date of the error. 
Need some help, some how by editing my config file .. i am now getting this error when i go to the main page.. however if i click on a an alert i see the grapth ... but if i go to the main page i get the belwo erro r... please help..

What did you modify in your config file?
Have you rolled back to your previous configuration?
Does that fix the issue?
What error do you see in the error log?

Thanks .. i did try to roll back to no avail ..the only section i added i have removed which it did not seem to fix the issue..

This looks like an issue with a smokeping file, not a config issue. If you
look, it said the error was in the Smokeping.pm file. Maybe try
redownloading smokeping and replacing that file only.

I have a Smokeping 2.6.7 install running over at
smokeping.asininetech.com/smokeping.cgi.

I am getting errors such as this:
ERROR: Could not save png to
'/usr/local/smokeping/htdocs/img/IRC/amy_mini.png'

The permissions on that directory:

Hi staticsafe,

Check what user is used to run the webserver. This user need write access
to the cache directory which i guess is for you :
/usr/local/smokeping/htdocs/img

What you can do if you want is to add this user in the  group called
"smokeping" so as the directory and files are owed by smokeping, this user
would have automatically write access to all the files in this directory.

Do me on Centos :  /etc/group (Apache is my webserver)
smokeping:x:498:apache

No luck. (www is the user nginx is run as.)

[root at ferrovax /usr/local/smokeping/htdocs]# pw usermod www -G smokeping
[root at ferrovax /usr/local/smokeping/htdocs]# chown -R www:smokeping ./img

Still getting the same errors.

Can you please send me your current config for the variables :

imgcache = /opt/smokeping-2.6.7/cache
imgurl  = /smokeping/cache
datadir  = /opt/smokeping-2.6.7/data

and the result of :

ps aux  | grep smokeping
ls -alh /usr/local/smokeping/htdocs/img

Can you also check the httpd log file (Error logfile) ?  And can you check
if you are using SELinux on your box (command : sestatus and logs should be
in : /var/log/audit/audit.log) ?

The issue here is that your imgurl needs to be a full path.  Just putting
"img" doesn't give it anywhere to look.

Oops, I made a mistake.  imgurl should actually be relative to a path on
the web, so it should actually be set to /img.

Ok, my pathnames config is this:

On the ngix error logs, there are some other errors (failed to open
Javascript / ...)

Did you check if you were running selinux on your box ? BTW, What OS are
you using ?
Did you use a package to install smokepiong or did you install smokeping
from the source ?

Smokeping running on FreeBSD 9.0 so no SELinux. I have fixed all the JS 
file not found errors.

So don't have a clue :-/

Maybe try to use the nginx user and try to create a file on the imgcache
directory manually.
And try to do a strace of the process to check what happens (whatever the
command on xBSD : truss ?)

I've run into an issue with SmokePing, its AnotherDNS probe, and Net::DNS
that I do not understand.

Specifically, every DNS probe SmokePing sends carries the very same
Query ID - which it shouldn't do from a DNS PoV, but even from staring
at the code involved, this should not happen (I have traces from various
versions of SmokePing and perl on FreeBSD and Linux that show this, so 
I claim it's not my local installation that is borked).


SmokePing does this (AnotherDNS.pm, pingone()):

 - for every invocation of pingone(), a new (random) DNS ID is rolled
 - for all $self->pings($target)  (5), the same ID is used, as the same
   Net::DNS::Packet is sent
   (whether this is "right" is debatable, but it is the way it is today)

but, what I see is that *every* *single* DNS packet that AnotherDNS
creates, no matter for which target (different packets!), or for which
run-of-5, will *always* use the very same DNS query ID - verified by
calling Data::Dumper on what Net::DNS::Packet->new() returns, "id => ..."
changes when I restart SmokePing, but after that, it's always the same.

Now, one could argue that "something in SmokePing is breaking rand()",
but it's not so easy.  If I change the SmokePing code to do this:

OTOH, Net::DNS::Packet is also very well-behaved if I call it from a

I think it's a SmokePing bug (the query ID should be randomized for 
every single packet, not only between runs) *but* the fact that it
can break what Net::DNS::Header is doing might warrant looking at the
implementation in Net::DNS - "applications should not be able to break
that!".  No?

I think I see the problem. The main SmokePing process forks the probe
subprocesses, which first call srand() in Smokeping::make_kid() to
initialize the random number generator.  The AnotherDNS probe then
starts one subprocess for each ping, but all of those inherit the state
of the RNG.

Does the attached (untested) patch fix it for you? 

% perl -le 'srand; fork; print "pid $$ => " . rand()'
pid 5039 => 0.712492274426953
pid 5040 => 0.712492274426953

% perl -le 'fork; srand; print "pid $$ => " . rand()'
pid 5250 => 0.967728406264545
pid 5251 => 0.62419137808411

Indeed, this explanation is completely logical (phew) and I was missing
that extra fork() - I knew that the AnotherDNS probe is forked once
(well visible in "ps") but I didn't know that individual ping runs gets
forked as well.  I *did* search for srand() calls in the source :-)

With your patch, the behaviour changes to "the query ID is identical
for each batch of 5 probes belonging to the same 'target'", which is what
one *should* expect after reading the code.

Whether sending multiple queries with the same query ID is "right" according
to DNS lore, I leave to Olaf to answer - but it takes out most of the 
confusion.

great ... I was experimenting with the fork call too, but I ignored
the srand call ... interestingly enough, things work fine if you do

% perl -le 'fork; print "pid $$ => " . rand()'

as if perl was doing an automatic srand on fork or someting ...

so maybe it would suffice to NOT call srand in Smokeping.pm ...

in any event, I have merged your patch for now ...

Yeah, rand() is documented to call srand() on the first time
unless srand() has already been called.

Removing all the srand() calls would probably work if we didn't call rand()
before forking either. But we currently do AFAICS, at least with

    if ($offset eq 'random'){
          $offset = int(rand($step));

% perl -le 'rand; fork; print "pid $$ => " . rand()'
pid 25161 => 0.437039271786006
pid 25162 => 0.437039271786006

Also, I see lib/SNMP_util.pm calls srand() on startup :)

So it seems safest to me to just call srand always after forking.
