No luck. (www is the user nginx is run as.)

[root at ferrovax /usr/local/smokeping/htdocs]# pw usermod www -G smokeping
[root at ferrovax /usr/local/smokeping/htdocs]# chown -R www:smokeping ./img

Still getting the same errors.
