I'm just doing a followup on this issue:

Since the package in Ubuntu bionic was smokeping 2.6.11 and fping was
4.0, I've decided to try and send a fix to that package so that folks
using that LTS release could have a functional version.

fwiw, ubuntu *after* bionic (not LTS yet) include 2.7.3 which contains
compatibility fixes. "cosmic" is still using 2.6.11, but the next
rolling release, "dingo" will have 2.7.3
