anyways ...

i got a little confused with these rules in the beginning ( when i was
working with firewalls) and found one easy way to look at it :

If the packet is coming through the cable to the card(interface)
then its inbound
if its coming form the motherboard to the card(interface)
then its outbound.
So only a packet with the host in question as origin or destination will
have only one of these as valid, since it will touch only one interface.
For every packet thats forwarded it is both inbound and outbound depending
on which interface it goes in and which it goes out. ( this is also true for
interfaces with aliases which are considered 2 interfaces)


i find the parallel above cheap but easy to figure out.

I don't see your point.
It doesn't matter if the router will transmit the packet further
to another place. They're still inbound.

If they are transmitted further, they will be *eventually* outbound,
most likely on another interface.
